In his patents practice, Ashwani’s core area of expertise is in drafting, prosecuting, and enforcing patent claims across different areas of technologies, with special emphasis on pharmaceutical, biomedical, and bioinformatics related inventions. Ashwani also assists clients on pre-grant and post-grant oppositions, patent revocations proceedings, and infringement actions in addition to advisory on patentability, validity, and enforceability of patent claims. He also assists clients in complying with and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals for protection of patents and plant varieties, such as under National Biodiversity Act of India. He also advises and assists clients with the registration of designs and protection of plant varieties in India.

Litigation, mediation, and dispute resolution constitutes a large part of Ashwani’s practice, which includes appeals, oppositions, cancellations, and revocation proceedings in relation to patents, designs, and trademarks. He specializes in designing strategies for enforcement, dispute resolution and amicable settlements in contentious proceedings. Ashwani regularly appears and argues matters before IP offices, Opposition Boards, Arbitration Panels, and IP Divisions of High Courts and District Courts. Ashwani also assists clients in conducting search and seizures of counterfeit goods and obtaining injunctions.
Ashwani works closely with in-house counsels of several Fortune 500 companies as well as academic institutes, universities, SMEs, start-ups, and individual entrepreneurs in strategizing the protection, management, and enforcement of their IP portfolios in India. Clients value Ashwani’s advisory and inputs on the transactional matters such as rights re-structuring agreements, licensing and assignment agreements, co-ownership and coexistence agreements, etc.
Ashwani is also an active member of several International IP organisations such as FICPI, INTA, IPO, AIPPI, APAA, and LES. He is currently serving as Co-Vice Chair of the Asian Practice Committee and Chair of India Sub-Committee of IPO. Ashwani is also an active member of Designs Committee of INTA. Ashwani enjoys writing and publishing on topics of interest and relevance in the IP space.
Recently, in 2021, Ashwani was ranked amongst India’s top IP Lawyers by Asian Legal Business (ALB).
